Job Coaching on the Move ! |
| DESCRIPTION: |
The job coaching programme in Birmingham is now fully underway and is
going from strength to strength .Gerry Byrne, seconded from
Pertemps Employment Alliance, is co-ordinating the programme.
The programme takes volunteer employees from companies and matches them up with Ready for Work Clients. The employee is known as a job coach and acts as a buddy / mentor to the client to support them through the work placement. The idea is to help clients help themselves back into the world of work by keeping the momentum, and supporting them to sustain employment.
To date, over 40 job coaches have been trained from the following
Companies: Cadbury Trebor Basset, Pertemps Employment Alliance, Wragge & Co ,ADI, IRS, Business in the Community & Cadbury World. As the programme is progressing more companies are coming on board.
Job coaches are from a variety of backgrounds, but all have a number of qualities in common. They are good at building relationships with a broad spectrum of people, have a natural empathy with others, are able to manage challenging people and situations and, of course, believe in the aims of this programme. The coaches training consists of a one day training session delivered by a professional mentor trainer from Mentioning & Befriending Foundation working with Birmingham & Solihull Connexions.
The role of the Job Coach is completely centred around the needs of the client. The aim is to help clients identify and achieve their employment objectives. This can be a highly rewarding experience for the coach. Other benefits for the coach are: developing more effective communication, management and interpersonal skills: building confidence and motivation; and the personal satisfaction in knowing that they have made a positive contribution to the development of someone who has experienced homelessness .
